Hammel Court is home to the Warriors’ volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball teams. The gym is equipped with retractable bleachers on both sides of the court in order to maximize space for practices. The facility has a capacity of 1,200 for Merrimack home games. Hammel Court also features six basketball hoops as well as a batting cage, which can be lowered from the ceiling for baseball and softball practices.
The oldest on-campus athletic facility at Merrimack, Hammel Court received a much-needed facelift in the summer of 2013; the entirety of the hardwood court floor was removed and replaced, offering a brand-new playing surface that should cater well to the Warriors in upcoming years.
Prior to the start of the 2011-12 season, Merrimack renamed its home court in honor of head coach Bert Hammel, whose service to both the program and to the College extended more than three decades. The Warriors' hardwood was emblazoned with its new name, Bert Hammel Court, on Oct. 22 as part of a special ceremony attended by friends, family and alumni.
In the past, Hammel Court has played host to many Northeast-10 Conference and NCAA postseason games. In 2005, the Merrimack women’s basketball team captured both the Northeast-10 Tournament title and NCAA Regional title in its home arena en route to the Final Four.
